An INE study stands out that 76 out of every 1,000 households are below the poverty line and if it is considered at an individual level, it accounts for 11 percent of those who suffer this social situation.
“The value taken by the proportion of poor people for the second semester of 2021 implies that out of every 1,000 people, 110 of them do not exceed the minimum income to cover the basic food and non-food needs considered by this methodology”, the institution states.
Poverty incidence also varies according to the sex of the head of household, “affecting to a greater extent female-headed households, both in Montevideo and within the country,” the INE states in another angle of its analysis.
An investigation by the University of the Republic in 2020, under the Covid-19 pandemic, showed that some 100,000 Uruguayans fell below the poverty line, when popular pots proliferated until now to mitigate the lack of purchasing power for family food of the most vulnerable sectors.
