Israel and Palestine address tension in occupied territories

Tel Aviv, Mar 24 (Prensa Latina) Israel's Public Security Minister Omer Barlev met with Palestinian Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh, amid the growing tensions in the occupied territories, Kan radio station reported on Thursday.

According to the source, the 30-minute meeting was aimed at trying to avoid an escalation before the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in early April.

This week, Maan news agency revealed that Israel is trying to persuade the Palestinian prisoners to end their plans to carry out an indefinite hunger strike that must begin this Friday, amid fears of an uprising of support in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The Tel Aviv Government asked the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to try to convince the prisoners, although they refuse unless that the neighboring state removes the punitive measures adopted against them in recent months.

In fact, Maan detailed, the PNA announced that it will only talk with the detainees on that issue if Israel puts an end to the repression in the prisons and recognizes the rights of those people.

According to the news agency, the Israeli army offered a deal to the leaders of the several Palestinian factions to stop their incursions in the West Bank during that month if they do not carry out operations against the occupation forces.
