Other capitals following New Delhi are Dhaka (Bangladesh), N’Djamena (Chad), Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and Muscat (Oman).
India is also home to 12 of the 15 most polluted cities in Central and South Asia. According to the report, New Delhi recorded a 14.6 percent increase in fine particulate matter PM2.5 concentration in the air in 2021.
Annual averages of PM2.5 concentration in almost half of Indian metropolises exceed the World Health Organization (WHO)’s air quality limits over 10 times.
According to the World Air Quality Report 2021, only 3.0 percent of cities and no country in the world met the WHO’s annual air quality guidelines for PM2.5.
