The Prosecutor’s Office specified that an investigation was opened and two individuals were detained, both under 35 years of age, who were inside the car at the time of the incident. The authorities are not considering the event a terrorist attack at the moment.
Prosecutor’s Office official Damien Verheyen told the press that the arrested have no criminal record and will be questioned during the day.
He also stated that the investigation was activated due to “death” and in the next few hours the facts will be reconstructed.
The tragedy occurred around 05:00, local time, and some witnesses assured that the driver had time to react and slow down the vehicle.
The mayor of Louvière, Jacques Gobert, urged folk groups to cancel the Strépy-Bracquegnies carnival.
