Uruguayan Judiciary under pressure from the Executive

Uruguay, amu, denuncia, ejecutivo, presión, justicia
Montevideo, Mar 9 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Magistrates of Uruguay (AMU) today expressed concern over an attempt by Interior Minister Luis Alberto Heber to put undue pressure on the judge hearing charges against two police officers.

Both were charged for the death of a 20 year old man, who was traveling on his motorcycle in August 2020, when he eluded a police checkpoint, and when being chased by the police lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree.

Heber appeared yesterday in the court of the department of Durazno where a procedural hearing was initiated and at the exit he declared to the press that he attended a “formalization that he does not understand” and that it was “a bad way to harass the police”.

AMU considers that such statements may represent an attempt of undue pressure on the acting judge”, and “ damage the fundamental separation of powers”.

The directive of the union reminded that the trial is in its initial stage and that it is not possible to predict what the final decision will be in a criminal proceeding. Frente Amplio Senator Charles Carrera commented on his Twitter account that it is very serious that judges receive pressures from the executive branch and asked Heber to stop subjugating another branch of the State, because Justice must have independence to make decisions.
