Speaking at the round table on Natural Disasters and Asymmetry of Climate Change in the Caribbean, at the 5th Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development, Ms. Rivas also expressed Cuba’s support for the ¨Caribbean First¨ initiative by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The Cuban deputy minister stressed that such an initiative places the Caribbean nations as core issues and regional efforts for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, in line with the principle of leaving no one behind.
“To the condition of Small Island Developing States and Middle Income Countries, the Caribbean is the unfair dichotomy of being the area most hit by climate change and the one that contributes the least to fighting it.”
Ms. Rivas said that at the recent international conference for the financing of rebuilding the southern peninsula of Haiti, the Cuban P President Miguel Díaz-Canel pointed out the liability and moral obligation of the international community with definitive transformation of the situation in Haiti.
Likewise, she continued, Díaz-Canel pointed out the significance of providing substantial and disinterested cooperation, not only for the reconstruction of some areas, but also to comprehensively promote sustainable development for Haiti.
