Opening Friday´s emergency session of the UN Security Council (UNSC) called to analyze the present crisis in Ukraine, Ms. DiCarlo warned attacks on nuclear sites are contrary to international humanitarian law.
In turn, Ms. DiCarlo called for the cessation of hostilities. “The fighting in Ukraine must stop. And must stop now!”
The Ukrainian nuclear plant in Zaporizhia, the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, was attacked at dawn in a military operation that is attributed to Russia.
Moscow’s permanent representative to UNSC Vasili Nebenzia strongly rejected those accusations, claiming “this is all part of an unprecedented media campaign of lies and misinformation against Russia.”
Speaking at the meeting, the Russian diplomat blamed the Zaporizhia incident on “a group of Ukrainian plotters” who attacked the nuclear site “to count against Moscow.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency indicated that the Ukrainian authorities informed of the fire caused at the nuclear site, which did not affect “pivotal” equipment and that the nuclear plant’s staffers took mitigation measures.
