Russian owner of English football team Chelsea pressed to sell

London, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich announced today he has put the English soccer team up for sale, amid pressure from the British opposition to include him on the list of Russian businessmen sanctioned by the government.

The millionaire said in a statement that he made the decision due to the current situation, and in the best interest of the members, sponsors and employees of the club and its fans.

Abramovich, who bought Chelsea in 2003, has been on Labor’s lips since the UK last week imposed a battery of sanctions on Russia in retaliation for Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

This Wednesday, the leader of the main opposition party, Keir Starmer, again questioned conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Parliament for not including the businessman of Russian-Israeli origin on the list of sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

According to Starmer, who also asked Johnson to accelerate the implementation of economic and financial sanctions against Moscow, Abramovic is a person of interest to the British Ministry of the Interior due to his alleged links with the Russian state.
