Brazilian gov’t probes delays Covid-19 vaccination for children

Brasilia, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Attorney General's Office (PGR) is probing on Wednesday whether the Government of President Jair Bolsonaro purposely delayed the start of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign for children.

Such an inquiry was opened after Senator Alessandro Vieira, Federal Deputy Tabata Amaral and the Municipal Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Ferreirinha, filed a petition to the STF.

The three officials accuse Bolsonaro and Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga of committing the crime of malfeasance by delaying the inoculation of children aged five to 11.

The accusation argues that the National Health Surveillance Agency authorized the vaccine from US laboratory Pfizer and German company BioNTech to be administered in children in December 2021.

The investigation underway at the PGR aims to analyze whether there is evidence to justify the accusations and, after that, the Agency will decide whether to open its own investigation against both.

This country recorded 297 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, totaling 649,630 so far, the Ministry of Health reported.

Brazil is the third country globally with the highest number of contagions by the pathogen, behind the United States and India.
