According to the organization, which fights for the elimination of atomic weapons not only in the United Kingdom but throughout the world, the possibility of such a conflict breaking out has never been more real in recent decades.
“We urge our government to bring all parties to the negotiating table to guarantee the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, implement the Minsk agreements and call for a stop to NATO expansion,” said the CND, which called on its supporters to send the petition in writing to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday the decision to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine at the request for aid by the autonomous republics of Donbass, and stressed that Moscow has no plans to occupy territories.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian military is not attacking cities, but uses high-precision weapons to disable the military infrastructure of the Ukrainian Army, so the civilian population is not in danger.
The United Kingdom and the rest of the Western powers described Moscow’s operation as a large-scale invasion against Ukraine, whose government requested membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the past.
The CND recalled that the United States and Russia together possess almost 12,000 nuclear weapons, so if there is no dialogue between the parties, it stressed, the conflict could end in the destruction of humanity.
