The leaders discussed the situation in Syria and, in particular, the promotion of the political process within the Astana format to ensure the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, the statement said.
According to the Syrian head of State’s office, al-Assad told Putin that at this time, Russia is defending itself and the principles of justice and humanism.
“Russia will teach the whole world a lesson that it is not only military force that gives greatness to powers, but also the respect for law, morality and humanistic foundations,” he added.
The conversation between the two presidents was promoted by Damascus and they addressed other issues related to bilateral cooperation, especially in the commercial and economic fields.
The leaders agreed to continue the contact at several levels.
