Burkina Faso Special Commission proposes date for elections

Burkina Faso
Ouagadougou, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The general elections for the return to civilian government in Burkina Faso will be held within 30 months, according to the project of the commission in charge of the matter, it was reported in this capital.

The date is contained in a proposal to be submitted for the approval of the head of the military junta, Lt. Col. Paul Henry Sandaogo, appointed president of this small landlocked West African state last January.

The full text of the program has not been released by the commission, which is also charged with restoring territorial integrity, consolidating peace, the return of internally displaced persons, establishing good governance and re-establishing constitutional order.

Burkina Faso has been under restrictive sanctions by the Economic Commission of West African States and the African Union since January 24 when a military coup overthrew President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, criticized for his ineffectiveness in stopping Islamist attacks.

The actions of Islamist groups based in the Sahel trying to settle in West Africa have caused the death of about 2,000 Burkinabe and the displacement of more than 1.5 million people fleeing the violence.
