In its report on world population growth and sustainable development, UN DESA revealed that since 1950 the number of people has way over tripled, and could reach 11 billion by the end of the century.
For such a reason, UN DESA said, the SDGs achievement, especially those closely related to health, education and gender equality, can contribute to curbing global population growth.
UN DESA added that even though population growth helps to increase the harmful impact of economic mechanisms against environment, the increased income per capita was more decisive than the demographic growth in terms of production, consumption and greenhouse emissions.
Most prosperous countries are those bearing a greatest responsibility in the speedy advance to achieve zero greenhouse emissions, and in the implementation of strategies to separate economic activity from environmental degradation.
