In a statement, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III ordered the deployment of troops to Germany “to help bolster NATO´s defenses as Russia forges ahead with its military incursion against Ukraine.
The announcement came despite the fact that President Joe Biden claimed his country has no interest in meddling into the armed conflict.
According to experts, Biden’s speech contradicts the US military´s stance, who say they will not hesitate to act if Russian President Vladimir Putin “turns his sights on a NATO´s member country.”
The deployment will bring to 14,000 US troops President Biden has ordered to send to Europe since he started to threaten Moscow over its “imminent invasion” of Ukraine.
According to official data, the deployment of US troops will raise the number in Europe to nearly 100,000.
Pentagon has moved six F-35 fighter jets and a group of other warplanes to Eastern Europe to bolster NATO´s allies.
Mr. Austin also ordered an infantry battalion – about 800 soldiers – to be sent to the Baltic. According to him, those troops and warplanes were already in Europe.
