Russia is interested in LatAm independence on world stage – Lavrov

Moscow, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Russia is currently interested in the independence of Latin America and the Caribbean on the international stage, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a meeting of Brazilian Foreign Minister Alberto Franca and Defense Minister Walter Souza Braga and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in the 2+2 format, that takes place in Moscow for the first time.

“We are interested in the independence role of Latin America and the Caribbean on the world stage, and we see a leading, central role that Brazil plays in ensuring the development of that major region of the world,” Lavrov stressed.

Russia values cooperation with Brazil in various formats – regional, as well as within the framework of BRICS, the United Nations and G20.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Alberto Franca, on the other hand, stated his country is very interested in enhancing two-way relations to higher level, especially amid current international situation, while expressing such a relation must prioritize respect for each nation´s sovereignty as well as norms of international law, in order to further develop strategic cooperation between the two governments.
