Barzani replaces Hoshyar Zebari, to whom the Federal Supreme Court suspended for failing to meet the conditions for the post.
Iraq held early parliamentary elections on October 10 and last week, the legislators ratified Mohammed al-Halbusi as Speaker of Parliament, following an agreement among the ruling KDP, the majority Sairoon bloc and Sunni Muslim lawmakers.
The Iraqi Constitution stipulates that the president must be a Kurd, the head of Government a Shiite Muslim, and the head of Parliament a Sunni Muslim.
If Barzani is elected, there will be a change in the presidential power that, since 2005, has been held by a representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
