The so-called earthquake swarm took place after a tremor registered last night (5.0) with an epicenter 71 kilometers off the coast of the department of Retalhuleu, the scientific institution explained.
In the last 24 hours, there have been 15 earth tremors but only yesterday’s was felt, the INSIVUMEH pointed out, while the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction ruled out human and infrastructure damage.
Another important piece of information, according to the source, is that during the last week there have been 15 events with origins in the Pacific Ocean and the coasts of Mexico, El Salvador and Santa Rosa.
Guatemala is exposed to these kinds of natural phenomena due to its location at the convergence of the Caribbean, Cocos and North American tectonic plates, as well as local geological faults.
