Archeologists find cache of Ancient Egyptian mummification materials

Cairo, Feb 9 (Prensa Latina) Czech and Egyptian archaeologists have found a cache of mummification materials in Abu Sir, south of the Pyramids of Giza, located in Greater Cairo, an official source reported Wednesday.

Egypt´s Tourism and Antiquities Ministry said in a statement the team of specialists, belonging to the mission of the Czech Institute of Egyptology, discovered an embalming cache, during their diggings in burial pits dating back late pharaonic era of the XXVI dynasty.

A 5.3-meter shaft (in diameter) and more than 14 meters deep housed unique materials consisting of 370 large ceramic vessels divided into 14 sets of seven to 52 pots, said Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The vessels contained remains of materials used during mummification process, Mr. Waziri stressed.

He added that four empty limestone canopic jars engraved with hieroglyphic texts were found.

According to Miroslav Barta, head of the archaeological team, this project is aimed at discovering antiquities dating back to an era as Egyptian society sought for new avenues to preserve its peculiar identity.
