The Agency will spend 2.5 million euros in this project, informed Edelvio Hidalgo, head of Science, Innovation and Development of the provincial branch of the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag).
Hidalgo specified that this program will strengthen the agrifood chains of pineapple and avocado fruits, at the local level in the aforementioned municipalities, with the aim of satisfying the demands of the Matanzas population.
According to specialized literature, pineapple is a source of vitamins and minerals such as bromelain, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, while avocado is rich in healthy fats and vitamin E.
“This work began in 2017 and initially had a commercial nature, since the objectives were to extract avocado oil for manufacturing cosmetics and to produce pineapple juice for the tourism sector”, explained the Minag specialist.
With the arrival of Covid-19, he added, the project took on a new scope and currently it is intended to produce fresh fruits for the state industry.
Hidalgo pointed out that the Credit and Service Cooperatives and the Basic Units of Cooperative Production of the aforementioned quartet of municipalities dedicated to these productions will be important beneficiaries.
