They are also electing two vice presidents and 57 members of the National Assembly in Latin America’s first elections of the year. Brazil and Colombia will also hold similar voting exercises in 2022.
For these general elections the Supreme Electoral Court set up 6,767 voting centers throughout Costa Rica, which will be opened till 18:00 local time. Even persons sick with Covid-19 are elligible to cast their ballots.
According to polls, none of the 6 main hopefuls will get 40% of the vote, that’s why political analysts believe there will be a runoff between the two politicians who get with highest number of ballots.
Three are the main favorite candidates: José María Figueres from the National Liberation Party who according to recent polls has the favor of 17% of the electorate; Lineth Saborio from Social Christian Unity with 12.8%, and Fabricio Alvarado from New Republic Party with 10%.
