Bogota, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) The number of massacres in Colombia in January totaled 13, accounting for 40 assassinations of social leaders and one signatory of the peace agreement.

According to data compiled by the Observatory of Human Rights and Conflicts of the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (INDEPAZ), the number of massacres in January, compared to the same month in 2021, doubled, as well as the number of deaths due to this type of crime.

In the first month of last year, six massacres were perpetrated, taking the lives of 21 people, according to reports from the human rights and peace organization.

The last of these violent acts took place last Friday in the municipality of Timbiqui, Cauca department, where four people were assassinated by unidentified individuals with heavy weapons.

Since the signing of the peace agreement in November 2016, the number of assassinations, massacres and displacement have increased, with the highest peak in 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
