Haiti records 75 aftershakes in three days

no-damage-as-magnitude-6-8-quake-shakes-el-salvador
Port-au-Prince, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) In only three days, Haitian authorities recorded 75 magnitude 5.5 earthquakes originated in a fault yet to be studied, generating concern about an increase in the seismic activity.

Geologist Eric Calais explained that those earthquakes did not occur on the Enriquillo fault, where a magnitude 7.2 quake occurred on August 14, but on a secondary fault possibly located in the Caribbean offshore, Le Nouvelliste newspaper reported.

The expert said that the authorities are working to determine if that sequence occurred on offshore faults, which would show that the system is active and contributes to the seismic hazard.

On Monday, a 5.3-magnitude quake in Richter’s open scale killed two people and 52 others were injured, while 191 houses were destroyed, 591 were damaged and 834 families were affected.

This is the second earthquake to cause deaths in Haiti in the last six months after a powerful one recorded in mid-2021, in which more than 2,200 people were killed and 12,700 were injured.
