Former PEMEX director to remain in jail for pending cases

Mexico, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) Emilio Lozoya Austin, former director of Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) during the Government of Enrique Peña Nieto, will remain behind bars for several pending corruption cases, federal judge Jose Artemio Zuñiga ratified on Thursday.

The judge responded to misrepresentations related to a court decision that freeing him from the fraudulent purchase of an agricultural nitrogen plant.

The hearing at the North Prison, where Lozoya Austin will remain imprisoned, closed in that way. The judge pointed out that the defendant has a family network abroad and can help him evade the Mexican justice.

His wife and children, of German nationality, live outside the country and have the financial and other resources so that he can hide in another nation.

In November 2021, Zuñiga dictated him preventive custody for the case of bribes paid by the Brazilian company Odebrecht and the crimes of money laundering, bribery and criminal association.
