Panama accelerates vaccination against Covid-19

Panama, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Panamanian health authorities on Wednesday highlighted the importance of the National Vaccination Program to fight Covid-19 as one of the measures to counter the fourth wave of contagions with the Omicron variant.

In its usual report, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) stated that since January 20, 2021, to date, 7,001,772 doses of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines have been administered.

With these doses, 80.7 percent of the target population, people aged five years and older, have received one dose, 71.9 percent two doses and 934,411 individuals aged 16 years and older have been administered a third booster shot.

The MINSA also established that as of February 20, the complete vaccination scheme will officially include three injections for people aged 16 years and older, a decree signed in January by President Laurentino Cortizo.

Panama on Tuesday reported 9,241 Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths due to complications related to the disease, totaling 659,379 contagions and 7,625 deaths, since the pandemic broke out in the country in March 2020.
