Egypt insists on binding agreement on Grand Ethiopian Dam

Cairo, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Egypt on Wednesday keeps its doors open for a talk on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which would allow Ethiopia to benefit from the generation of electricity without causing damage to riverside nations, the Government stated.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly posted on his Facebook account that Cairo wants to reach a binding agreement to settle the dispute this nation is facing with Sudan and Ethiopia.

We are ready to resume talks as soon as possible with the aim of putting an end to the technical and legal differences with the objective of reaching a fair and balanced pact, Madbouly wrote.

The prime minister recalled that any proposal must take into account Egypt’s water scarcity and its dependence on the Nile River as its main water resource.

Tensions rose amid 2021 following Ethiopia’s decision to carry out the second filling of the dam unilaterally, which raised harsh protests from Khartoum and Cairo.

Egypt states that the work threatens its share of the Nile water, on which human consumption, agriculture and industry of the country, with more than 100 million people, depend almost entirely.
