Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said in a message on social media that ties have begun to be restored.
The two major economies of the Islamic community severed diplomatic relations in January 2016, following a mass attack on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran due to the execution in the kingdom of prominent Shia clergyman Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.
Since April last year, the two countries have held four rounds of talks to improve ties, which Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has described as positive and constructive. Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran is ready to restore relations with Riyadh at any time, and expressed Iran’s enthusiasm for the possible reopening of embassies and consulates.
