On Tuesday, the Regional Refugee Response Plan was released, which includes $623 million to aid 5.7 million displaced Afghans and local communities in five neighboring countries, the UN Secretary-General´s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.
The complex situation, coupled with the worst drought in 20 years, have forced 24.4 million Afghans, more than half of the country´s population, in need of humanitarian aid, according to UN data.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator Martin Griffiths said conditions for most Afghan families are unsustainable and a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe is looming, if not to act urgently.
One million children are at risk of facing acute hunger if there is no immediate response, the high representative emphasized.
