United Nations, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) The Latin American and Caribbean cities will consume two to four times more resources by 2050 than is sustainable if they continue without a strategy in this regard, the UN warned Wednesday.

A great number of regional cities urgently need to implement measures of circularity, connectivity and restoration of ecosystems, according to a report by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) released on Wednesday.

The use of fossil fuels, minerals and food must also be halved and, at the same time, fight poverty and inequality, the report indicated.

UNEP estimated that around 90% of total Latin American and Caribbean population will continue to live in some city, that´s why it is so critical to steam ahead designing more efficient and sustainable cities.

According to the report entitled ¨The weight of cities in Latin America and the Caribbean: future resource requirements and potential routes of action,¨ the lack of circularity implies serious degradation of vital ecosystems.

This has a catastrophic impact not only on nature, but on the livelihoods, health and well-being of regional people.

Plus, the world’s cities generate up to three-quarters of greenhouse emissions and it is critical to scale down such figures.
