Mechanical ventilation promotes lung metastasis

mechanical ventilation (MV)
Washington, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) A team of researchers warned that mechanical ventilation (MV) can induce lung stroma/tissue milieu changes, creating a favorable microenvironment for postoperative lung metastatic tumor establishment.

According to the European Respiratory journal, this process also induces changes in their genetic transcription that alter their characteristics and facilitate their dissemination and distant metastasis from the neoplasm of origin.

The results showed how even a short period of mechanical ventilation in lung metastasis can later favor the appearance of distant metastasis.

In fact, patients who underwent this procedure are nearly five times more likely to develop metastasis than those not connected to MV.

“Among altered mechanisms, the cholesterol synthesis route stands out, which is involved in changes in the physical properties of the cell since percentage of this molecule is a determining factor in membrane rigidity,” scientists said.

“Soft membranes ease cell mobility and migration, which makes cholesterol metabolism key in cancer cells invasiveness.”

Specialists proposed to use a drug (Alirocumab) to treat hypercholesterolemia. This drug helps reduce cancer cells to metastasize.
