The president of the Assembly (national legislative body), Talat Xhaferi, made the resignation official of Zaev and the entire government, without further debate.
Zaev also ceased as leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDSM).
In the next few days, the president, Stevo Pendaroski, must entrust the formation of a new executive to the political force or alliance with more possibilities of gathering a parliamentary majority.
Analysts consider Dimitar Kovachevski, current deputy finance minister and Zaev’s successor at the head of SDSM, as the possible candidate.
The outgoing 47-year-old prime minister took office in 2017 and won a second term after the early 2020 general election.
