Omicron now dominant variant in Denmark, says health minister

Omicron
Copenhagen, Dec 21 (Prensa Latina) Danish health authorities reported on Tuesday 13,558 Omicron cases and 17 deaths in just 24 hours, recognizing it is the predominant variant in the country.

Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said on Tuesday that Omicron infections account for 44% of all cases reported, and called for expanding vaccination campaign as the most effective measure to curb the spread of the disease.

Henrik Ullum, director of the Statens Serum Institute (SSI), the entity in charge of monitoring the pandemic in Denmark, recently pointed out that to halt the spread of omicron “the most powerful weapon so far is the vaccine.”

Mr. Ullum urged Danish people to get vaccinated as soon as possible to increase protection and try to avoid the spread of the disease across the country.

SSI reported on Tuesday that Denmark´s omicron infection rate was 2,036 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last fourteen days.

This figure has been the highest reported in the European Union and much higher than the rate of other Nordic countries such as Norway (1,401), Finland (507) and Sweden (329), the source said.

Past Friday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced new regulations to fight the pandemic.
