Diaz-Canel recalls return of five anti-terrorist heroes to Cuba

return of five anti-terrorist heroes to Cuba
Havana, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday recalled the return home seven years ago of three of the five Cuban heroes who served unjust sentences in US prisons for fighting terrorism.

Unforgettable day, #17December 2014, when Gerardo, Ramon and Antonio arrived in the homeland and #Fidel’s promise that the Cuban Five would return was fulfilled, the president wrote on Twitter.

The ‘Cuban Five’, as they were known worldwide, were victims of unjust convictions in the United States after a legal process with several irregularities, allegedly for being part of an espionage network of the Cuban Government.

Reality is that the anti-terrorist fighters monitored the movements of organizations that had planned pirate attacks, sabotages and different forms of aggression against Cuba under the complicit eyes of US authorities.

Although it could not be proven that they had access to any information of risk to US national security, they remained in prison for more than 16 years.

On December 17, 2014, as a result of negotiations between the two countries, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramon Labañino returned to Cuba. Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez had earlier returned to the country after serving their sentences.

In Cuba, the Five were granted the status of Heroes of the Republic and the Playa Giron Order, in addition to their people’s recognition.
