Communist Party for rescue of sugar industry in Cuba

Havana, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) The Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) is analyzing a proposal to rescue the sugar industry, once the main source of income for the country, with years of contraction nowadays. The 3rd PCC Plenary Session, which is taking place for the second day on Friday at Havana's Convention Center, is debating a program of 93 measures to relaunch the industry, its by-products and the generation of electricity by sugar mills.

As reported by the Presidency’s website, since 2017 the sugar sector has been decreasing and 2021 was the most critical period.

PCC plenary sessions are chaired by the first secretary of the Central Committee, Miguel Diaz-Canel, who is also the president of the Republic.

The measures under analysis cover areas like production, financing, logistics, management, human potential, and others.

Members of the Central Committee consider the program as profound and urgent to save this major economic sector, the source underlined.

More than 160,000 workers are directly linked to the sugar industry and 600,000 people are related to it.

It is the main source of livelihood for fifty municipalities and sugarmill villages, and it is part of the identity of the Cuban nation.
