Bangladesh celebrates 50 years of independence

Dhaka, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Bangladesh celebrates today 50 years of independence under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, after a nine-month liberation war against Pakistani occupying forces in 1971.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the heroes fallen during the Liberation War by laying wreaths at the Savar National Monument at the outskirts of the capital.

This year’s Victory Day coincides with the centenary of the birth of the Father of the Nation and half a century of the country’s independence.

Celebration programs include the raising of national flags in government and private offices as well as in autonomous organizations of the country, the decoration of streets and the night lighting of buildings and important establishments.

Detachments from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Forces, as well as Freedom Fighters, paramilitary forces, law enforcement and various government ministries take part in a parade.

Following sanitary guidelines, special prayers will be offered in mosques and other places of worship, asking for eternal peace for the souls of the ‘martyrs’ of the Liberation War and the peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

All playgrounds and museums in the country will remain open to all and films based on the War of Liberation will be screened free of charge.

National newspapers printed special supplements for the occasion, while Bangladesh Post Office will release commemorative stamps.

State and private television and radio broadcast programs highlighting the War of Liberation, and enhanced diets will be served on the day for inmates, hospitals, orphanages and homeless homes across the country.
