Uruguayan Senate considers forestry law threatened by president

Senado-uruguay
Montevideo, Dec 15 (Prensa Latina) The Senate of Uruguay on Wednesday scheduled a bill for the regularization of forestry land that, if it is voted on, will have a majority and the repeated veto threat by President Luis Lacalle Pou.

The president made clear such reaction since December 15, 2020, when the legislative proposal from the Cabildo Abierto Party received the approval of its legislators in the Lower House, the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) and the Ecologist Radical Intransigent Party.

The group promoting the project aimed to establish limits to boost forests for the paper industry, to the detriment of other agricultural sectors, especially those linked to the dairy industry.

According to known aspects, it establishes environmental control and the approval for new forest plantations of more than 100 hectares and a series of technical requirements.

FA senator Alejandro Sanchez described those controls as positive, but they do not contradict the law that his legislators will vote on because it is good for the country and its people, mainly to protect family production, the dairy industry and the food production sectors.
