The Cuban representative of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) in Toronto, Lessner Gómez, wrote in Twitter Sungwing will soon start flying from Ottawa to Cayo Coco and from Regina and Winnipeg to Varadero.
He said he was hopeful with the resumption of the travel industry in his country, open to international tourism since last November 15. Now, he stressed, there will be about 17 daily flights from Canada to Cuba.
Just after over 15 days since the island’s reopening, the country received half the travelers it had welcomed throughout all the year.
Tourism authorities reported more than 50 thousand visitors in the last two weeks of November, compared to 100,000 who arrived during the year.
The Cuban Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García, also indicated that with these first figures the prospects are good.
He pointed out that Cuba hopes to have a high-growth winter tourist season, backed by a wide air operation, commitment and professionalism of the partners inside and outside the country.
Between January and June of this year, Cuba attended 114,460 international tourists, but the authorities are optimistic about the recovery of this industry due to the efforts and investments.
