The announcement was made a few hours after the conclusion of a promotion by ETECSA that benefited all Cubans over 18 years of age with the activation of a cell line at half the price.
Cuba concluded 2020 with some 6.6 million mobile phone users, of whom approximately 4.5 billion accessed the Internet through this platform.
According to ETECSA statistics from early 2021, data traffic in the country almost doubled the total in 2019, growing 1.9 times, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In early 2020, there were 7.1 million people connected and the Internet penetration rate (percent of the population connected) was 63 percent. For the second consecutive year, Cuba has reported in 2021 an index higher than the world average, which in the first months of the year was 59.5 percent.
