Mexico starts booster vaccination against Covid-19 for the elderly

Mexico, Dec 7 (Prensa Latina) Mexico City's health ministry began today the application of the booster dose of vaccines against Covid-19 for people over 60 years of age, although for the time being limited to Tlalpan's district.

The agency indicated that it is only the beginning, and as doses acquired from different laboratories will arrive, the plan will be extended to the rest of the 16 municipalities, still to that same age group from the population considered the most vulnerable.

It is the first experience in Mexico with a third dose or booster, since immunizing plans applied were for only two and some for even a single shot. However, older adults, inoculated with Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac, have already passed the period of six to nine months of maximum efficacy of vaccines.

The one to be applied from today is AstraZeneca, which is bottled in Mexico within a joint plan with Argentina, and also counts with the largest acquisition contracts.

Concerning the evolution of the pandemic, the ministry office reported in the last 24 hours 48 new related deaths in the country, thus total mortality numbers amount to 295,202 since the beginning of the disease in February 2020.

In addition, they reported 20,067 active cases, that is, people with symptoms in the last 14 days, so, if necessary care is not taken, the virus could be further transmitted.

According to the report, the epidemiological week opens with a decrease of 17 percent compared to same previous periods.

Hospitalization remains below 20 percent: 15 percent occupancy of general beds, one point less than yesterday, and 13 percent of beds with ventilators, same figure as yesterday.
