Jose Manuel Albares, minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, stressed the sector’s great transforming, inclusive and sustainable capacity, as a source of employment and development, at the 115th session of the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
In his remarks, Albares underscored the importance of the initiative by his colleague Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, to seek ways for women’s empowerment in the sector.
Albares recalled that tourism has been one of the economic sectors hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in Spain, “but thanks to having almost 90 percent of the population vaccinated, we can affirm that we are facing a solid recovery.”
The 24th UNWTO General Assembly concluded on Friday in Madrid with several agreements, including the implementation of a Code to Protect Travelers against pandemics, natural disasters and climate change.
