The officials to be prosecuted are Diana Atamaint (president of the CNE), Enrique Pita (vice-president) and members José Ricardo Cabrera, Esthela Acero, and Luis Verdesoto, who left office after the elections and currently serves as advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.
The request was promoted by the assembly members of the Pachakutik party, Joel Abad and Mario Ruiz, in whose opinion the councilors did not adequately carry out the functions assigned to the electoral body under the Constitution and the Law, during the presidential elections of 2021.
The petitioners claim that there were irregularities in those elections, held in the first round in February of this year and a runoff in April.
Among the alleged problems cited are the unusual increase in the number of voters in the corresponding registry, by about 1,700,000 citizens, and sudden changes in the vote tallies on the CNE web page during vote counting.
