Presidents of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan meet in Sochi

Moscow, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) The presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, respectively, and the prime minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinian, began tripartite negotiations in the city of Sochi, the Kremlin reported today.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Russian President expressed confidence that in the near future it will be possible to make decisions on the unblocking of transport routes in Nagorno-Karabakh.

For his part, Pashinian stated that Yerevan and Baku reached concrete decisions on stabilization in the South Caucasus, TASS news agency reported.

The meeting coincides with the first anniversary of the signing of the declaration on ceasefire and all hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone on November 9, 2020.

According to the Russian authorities, the meeting was Putin’s initiative and the leaders are expected to review the progress of the implementation of the agreements established on that date and on January 11 this year, as well as to propose new actions to strengthen stability in the region.

They will pay attention to the steps taken by Armenia and Azerbaijan for the restoration and development of trade and economic relations, as well as transport routes linking the two countries and other nations in the area.

In Nagorno-Karabakh, fighting ceased on November 10 under a declaration adopted by the highest authorities of these states and Russia, after almost two months of fighting that resulted in thousands of deaths.

As part of the agreements between Yerevan, Baku and Moscow, a contingent of two thousand Russian soldiers was sent to the conflict zone, deployed while Armenian forces withdrew from the Azerbaijani districts of Agdam, Kelbecer (Kalbajar) and Lachin, occupied during the 1992-1994 war.
