The Military Prosecutor’s Office in Misrata, some 210 kilometers from Tripoli, on Thursday issued a death sentence to the strongman in the east of war-scarred Libya for the bombing in 2019 of the Air Defense College of the city, where a person was killed.

The death sentence also involved several of Haftar’s military collaborators, including Abdelrazik Al-Nathori, Saqr Al-Jeroushi, Abdelsalam Al-Hassi.

Local media echoed the news on front pages, but the sectors linked to the military officer has remained silent.

Repeatedly accused of several crimes during the conflict, Haftar is one of the main candidates in the December 24 presidential elections, along with other figures such as Parliament Speaker Aqilah Saleh and interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeiba.

The international community considers these elections fundamental to end the spiral of violence in since Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011, after a war supported by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), including the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

Under the auspices of the United Nations, 75 Libyan delegates, representing several factions and territories, elected a transitional government in February to lead the country until the elections are held.
