A few minutes after the explosion, the Islamist armed group Al-Shabab (The Youth, in Arabic) claimed responsibility for the action through its illegal radio station and stated that the attack was against a foreign delegation convoy, in which none of whom were injured, according to official sources.
In contrast, an unknown number of students of the school were killed or remain buried under the rubble of the building while rescuers and volunteers are trying to rescue them.
Al-Shabab is the main enemy of the Somali Government of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known as Farmaajo. He has international recognition and support of the African Union, but has no control over vast rural areas where Al-Shabab, loyal to Al Qaeda network, dominates.
