Mexico works on decree in favor of irregular Haitian migrants

México, migrantes, haitianos, decreto
Mexico, Nov 24 (Prensa Latina) After strong pressure from undocumented immigrants in the city of Tapachula, it was revealed on Wednesday that the Mexican government is preparing a decree that would allow Haitians with an irregular status to be offered an immigration choice.

Sources from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid indicated that Haitians do not come to the country for reasons of persecution or generalized violence, but rather to escape from the country’s economic conditions, which disqualify them to get refuge, thus complicating their situation.

Commission President Andres Ramirez explained that due to conditions in Haiti, it would be inhumane to return them home, because they do not qualify as refugees.

He pointed out they cannot send them back to their homeland because it is very difficult to survive there, so for this reason it is necessary to look for other alternatives.

The statements were made on the occasion of a visit by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi to Tijuana, where there are hundreds of Haitian migrants who are expecting to enter the United States.
