Cairo, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) The Egyptian government is working on a program to increase renewable energy production to 10,000 megawatts by mid-2023, according to an official source.

The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker specified that the initiative is part of an ambitious project to tackle climate change, as per the official MENA news agency.

Egypt will host the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November 2022 in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Cairo authorities plan to increase renewable energy generation to 42 percent of the national total in 2035 and up to 60 percent by 2040.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouy advocated last week turning Egypt into a green hydrogen producing center.

“We have the potential to produce renewable energy at competitive prices due to the country’s geographic location and its proximity to Europe,” said Yehia Zaki, head of the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
