20 people killed in Burkina Faso by armed attack

Burkina Faso - attack
Ouagadougou, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) Authorities in Burkina Faso reported today that 20 people were killed, including nine policemen, by an attack by unidentified gunmen against a security post in the northern province of Sanmatenga.

According to the Minister of Communication, Ousseni Tamboura, several policemen are also missing after the attack, which took place in the last few hours.

The source specified that the assault occurred seven days after heavily armed individuals killed some 60 people, among them 53 police officers, in the province of Soum, according to local media.

Following this event, the military and police forces launched an operation in the area to capture the attackers, said the Minister of Security, Máxime Koné.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso, like other countries in the Sahel region, has been the scene of deadly attacks by groups affiliated with the Al-Qaeda network and the Islamic State.

Attacks on military and police posts have increased in recent weeks, particularly near the border with neighboring Mali.

According to the United Nations, violence unleashed by armed groups in Burkina Faso has displaced more than 1.2 million civilians.
