Weapons seized at Haiti’s main airport

Port-au-Prince, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian Police arrested three U.S. citizens at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport of this capital and seized five firearms, the local press revealed today.

According to the official balance, the agents confiscated an AR15 automatic rifle of caliber 5.56 millimeters, four pistols nine millimeters and three boxes of ammunition, detailed the digital platform Vant Béf Info.

The Central Directorate of the Judicial Police announced the opening of an investigation to determine the final destination of these weapons and the suspects are being held in custody while the investigations continue.

Earlier this month, it became known that three residents of Florida, United States, are facing federal charges for allegedly smuggling weapons into Haiti destined for the 400 Mawozo gang, responsible for the kidnapping of 16 Americans and a Canadian in mid-October.

It is estimated that more than half a million illegal weapons circulate in this country, entering through ports and airports with little control by the authorities.

In 2019, Haiti’s National Commission for Disarmament, Dismantlement and Reintegration revealed that its illicit trade is controlled by 11 private sector individuals and they enter the territory irregularly by sea.
