Promised EU aid does not arrive

Minsk, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) The governor of the Belarusian town of Grodno, Vladimir Karanik, said today that his country still does not receive the aid promised by the European Union (EU) for refugees on the Belarusian-Polish border.

“They stated that the European Union would allocate 700 thousand euros to help refugees. But so far we have not seen a single dollar or euro of international aid. It is clear that staying (migrants) in these conditions requires funding,” he said, according to Belta news agency.

Karanik noted that Minsk continues to help foreigners at the border, which, he stressed, is part of the Belarusian people’s way. “When we see that people are in trouble and need help, we first provide assistance, and only after that we know that it cost us,” the head of the Grodno region said.

On November 17, the European Commission reported that it would allocate 700 thousand euros to support migrants that have gathered on the border between the two countries, of which 200 thousand will be distributed through the Belarusian branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The member of the Council of the Republic of Belarus (Upper House of Parliament), Victor Liskovich, informed on November 18 that as of that day the country would start vaccinating migrants on the border with Poland against Covid-19.

The Belarusian senator indicated that about 10 thousand medical masks were distributed among the refugees and warned that more and more of them fall ill after being outdoors for 10 days.

He added that a currency exchange office will be opened for the migrants who are in the Bruzgi logistics center, and food and other basic necessities will be distributed among them.
