Mr. Swan recalled at the UN Security Council that more than a year has passed since the Electoral Agreement was signed in Somalia and also nearly six months since commitment was reaffirmed.
Political leaders´ efforts should be redoubled in forthcoming weeks to bring elections to Federal Parliament to a successful conclusion, so that presidential elections can be held as soon as possible, Swan said.
“The completion of these elections is more important than ever, so that all effort can return to the key governance, security, and development priorities in Somalia.”
He also found it encouraging that 14 women will soon take office to serve as senators, accounting for 26% of the 54-member Upper House. The figure is still under 30% target expected, though.
In this regard, Mr. Swan pointed out that the UN will continue working to reach more women´s representation in power.
