WTO seeks significant agreement at 12th ministerial conference

Geneva, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) More than 160 member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will seek to reach a significant agreement on agriculture and other issues at the 12th Ministerial Conference of that organization, experts state on Tuesday.

They agree that agriculture, particularly the trade reform in agricultural products, captures much of the attention in the negotiations being conducted in the committees of the organization with a view to presenting a draft to reach consensus and achieve a concrete result. The participants in the meeting, which will be held from November 30 to December 3 in Geneva, should find common criteria on these and other essential issues in the global trade, such as market access, subsidies and transparency.

They will also address export competition and export restrictions, safeguard mechanisms, development support and the international insertion of small businesses, trade facilitation, e-commerce, and fisheries issues, among others.

The participation of that organization in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, which has a negative impact on the world trade and is responsible that the ministerial meeting has been postponed, is also a frequent issue.
